What are Flower Essences?

Flower essences (or ‘remedies’ – the terms are used interchangeably) are the vibrational imprint, or etheric pattern of particular flowers or plants prepared in liquid form. You can imagine, as science tells us, that everything – plants, animals, the Earth, stars – is made up at it’s very basic level of vibrations of energy. Then you can also imagine that every flower species has a particular vibration different in some way than any other. The energy of a dark red rose is different than that of a bright white lily in color, form, scent, texture, and so on. These tangible factors are associated with the flower’s individual vibrational pattern or ‘etheric essence’.

The vibrational pattern of each flower can be ‘imprinted’ in pure water through certain preparation methods – one used most often is the infusing (like making tea) of fresh flowers just picked in glass bowls of spring water sitting in bright sunlight. The water then takes on the etheric vibration of the flower, resulting in what has been termed a ‘flower essence’.
Vibrations and Emotional Energies

Now lets imagine that we as human beings are also made up of, at some level, vibrational energy. If we take this a step further, one can imagine that our ‘soul’ or ‘personality’ or whatever term you’d like to use here, has a vibration or etheric pattern of its own. Your ‘soul pattern’ includes your emotional makeup, and it directly influences your actions, choices, and perceptions of the world, both on a material and a spiritual level.

It turns out, as Dr. Edward Bach discovered in the 1930’s, that flower essences can alter our own etheric patterns. The vibrational imprint of a flower, prepared in water, can directly effect our own energetic makeup in a positive way. If you imagine that every emotion has a particular vibration, you can also imagine that vibration being affected or ‘tuned’ by the introduction of another vibration – that of a flower essence.

Flower Essence Application

We’ll take the clear example of the use of one of Dr. Bach’s original flower essences, Impatiens. You can think of being ‘impatient’ as being a bit ‘high strung’, where nothing is happening fast enough, with an overall sense of anxiety. This can be thought of as a particular vibration common to many individuals of the human species, and it may also be thought of as not particularly pleasant or useful – a ‘stress’ one might want to alter or release. By taking the Impatiens flower essence, the vibration of the flower synergistically alters a particular vibration of the individual, resulting in a noticeable calming action for many people.

Specificity of Effects

The use of the word ‘synergistically’ here is important: it has been found that each flower essence affects certain ‘soul patterns’ and not others. For example, if one is by nature, a patient person, one would not likely be affected by Impatiens flower essence. This is one of the many beauties of flower essence therapy – they are completely safe for anyone to take. An incorrectly chosen flower essence will likely result in no effect at all; there are no ‘side effects’ to be spoken of.

Broad Range of Uses for Emotional Healing

And this is a relatively simple case; one’s vibrational makeup may be affected by a particularly stressful early childhood relationship with one’s mother, and one could choose a flower essence to assist in the change or healing of that emotional vibration (Evening Primrose, as an example). There is clearly a great breadth of human emotion and experience, and as such there are a great many flower essences available. We carry both the original 38 flower essences developed by Dr. Bach, as well as the 103 North American flower essences from Flower Essence Services. For more on flower essences and flower essence therapy, see Choosing Flower Essences and Using Flower Essences, as well as the particular section on the Bach Flower Essences and Remedies.

An essential oil is a highly concentrated natural plant extract in the form of an aromatic liquid. When essential oils are used, the aromatic molecules of the oils are absorbed into the blood stream and transported to the limbic system. The limbic system is the processing center for reason, emotion, and smell and can thus trigger an emotional release. Although there are three different grades of essential oils only the top grade, therapeutic grade, has healing properties. We utilize organic therapeutic grade essential oils in our practice for massage and aromatic inhalation. Essential oils are concentrated volatile aromatic compounds produced by plants, the easily evaporated essences that give plants their wonderful scents. Each of these complex precious liquids are extracted from a particular species of plant life. Each plant species originates in certain regions of the world, with particular environmental conditions and neighboring fauna and flora. The result is a very diverse library of aromatic compounds, with some essential oils being made up of more than one hundred distinct organic chemicals.

What do they do for plants?

Essential oils are extracted from oil ‘sacs’ in flowers, leaves, stems, roots, seeds, wood and bark. They differ significantly from the well-known vegetable, nut and seed oils which are made up of various fatty acids (essential oils are not). Essential oils are used by the plants in somewhat the same way they are by humans – they fight infection, contain hormone-like compounds, initiate cellular regeneration, and work as chemical defense against fungal, viral, and animal foes. Despite their foliar origins however, essential oils have a similar structure to some compounds found in blood and tissues, allowing them to be compatible with our own physiology.

How Essential Oils Are Extracted

To produce essential oils of therapeutic quality – those that retain as much of the original plant essence in its original state as possible – the most gentle extraction method that will draw the oil from a particular plant is most desirable. Extraction methods range from Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extraction – being the most gentle (and most expensive), to pressing (as for extracting the oil from citrus rinds) and steam distillation, to solvent extraction. Steam distillation is most common, and as a result of only requiring heating to just above the boiling point of water, is considered gentle enough for most essential oils. (Note: All of Ananda’s essential oils are of Therapeutic Quality, being 100% pure, unadulterated, and properly produced to this standard – Read more about how essential oils are made).

The History of Essential Oils

Humankind has used plants for healing for many thousands of years, and it’s from this tradition of that the use of aromatic plant compounds is medicine began. (see About Aromatherapy for a more in depth discussion of the olfactory aspects of essential oil use). Documented use of aromatic plants dates back to near 4500 B.C., though it was in the hands of the ancient Egyptians that the use of oils and plant aromatics was truly developed. Oils were used in the embalming process, in medicine and in purification rituals. In 1922, when King Tut’s tomb was opened, 50 alabaster jars made to contain nearly 350 liters of oil were discovered. There are also over 200 references to aromatics, incense and ointments in the Old and New Testaments; Frankincense, Myrrh, Galbanun, Cinnamon, Cassia, Rosemary, Hyssop and Spikenard are noted for being used for anointing rituals and healing of the sick.

Veterinary / Equine thermograph is a rapidly growing field. Doctors, trainers, handlers and owners are all finding new ways to use thermal infrared analysis to diagnose a wide range of animal issues including; performance enhancement, soft tissue stress, vascular studies, lameness, abscesses and infections. Objects around us give off heat to some degree, and that heat is made up of long wavelength infrared radiation that the human eye cannot see. Thermal imaging uses a sensor to convert the radiation into a visible light picture. Not only does this picture help us identify objects in total darkness, or through dense smoke, but the sensor information can be used to measure temperature differences in animals as well as humans.

How This Works

The cold laser or low level laser system. This class of lasers is also often referred to as a soft laser or healing laser and refers to very low powered lasers which have been designed to gently rejuvenate cells. Low level lasers are totally safe and work on a completely regenerative basis. Cold lasers rejuvenate the cells by gently donating energy in the form of photons, which then increases the energy molecule of the cell, called ATP, which in turn stimulates the cell to grow more efficiently. This works in the same way that a garden works. Sunlight donates photons which in turn energizes the plants to grow bigger and healthier fruits and vegetables.
Uses and Benefits

The cold Laser has been designed for the health practitioner to use structured coherent light to rejuvenate cells and will find great benefit from the use of cold lasers. We specifically condition our lasers to not only rejuvenate the cell, but also to unwind and clear cell memory, to activate latent quantum biological processes. We do this with advanced patent pending Wave star technology and unique violet crystal laser diode technology. These systems are used by many health practitioners such as chiropractors, acupuncturists, acupuncturists, naturopaths, biological dentists, physical therapist, sports teams and of course animal massage/acupressure practitioners. They are used for injuries and pain relief, stress and disease, facial rejuvenation, smoking cessation, diet cessation, organ detox and balancing, cranial and glandular unwinding, acupuncture, acupressure and energy healing, lymphatic wellness and rejuvenation and quantum activation. All of these protocols have been designed for practitioners to allow easier application. We are not doctors and the cold laser Protocols are not designed to treat or cure medical conditions. Rather this approach is based on the understanding that the body is fully capable of rejuvenating and finding solutions to its injuries and disease. Especially when it’s key quantum systems are relaxed and at ease, and when there is plenty of coherent energy available, either from lasers or the universe of which we are all connected.
Our Approach to Lasers and Healing

Basically it is our approach when people/animals become stressed and tense they hold onto cellular memory, which renders the body incoherent. When the body is incoherent it no longer taps into the vast reservoir of space and neutral energy. Our approach to lasers is to unwind and clear this cellular memory so that the body can relax and unwind and open back up to the abundant energy of the universe. When it does these injuries, stress and disease disappear. As does energy when it flows and is abundant is vital and full of life. So in summary our approach is not fix or heal the injuries or the “disease”, rather we seek to unwind the cell memory which tells those cells and body systems to remain closed off to the universe of energy. We unwind this stress and tension in much the same way that an old tape recorder is erased, by simply reversing the polarity. The cold Lasers use a revolutionary Scalar Wave technology to achieve this ability to easily delete the cell memory.

A non-invasive healing modality, Cold Laser Therapy should be utilized as a complementary therapy and never as a substitute for proper veterinary care.

Itouch Massage is a proactive therapy that not only addresses your dog’s health issues in the here and now, but it also helps ensure your dog’s wellness and well being in the future.

Reiki is another non-invasive therapy modality which offers many benefits for your dog. Massage and Reiki are both relaxing and healing methods to utilize in a well-rounded, integrated health and wellness plan for your best friend.

Whether your dog:

* is older, has arthritis or is just stiff
* needs special therapies to help heal from surgery or other medical issues
* is disabled or has special needs
* participates in agility or obedience trials
* is active, plays hard, and gets regular exercise
* is a service dog or working dog

Benefits of massage are invaluable. Not only is massage relaxing and invigorating, but it can also:

* improve elimination of metabolic waste
* improve flexibility at the joints
* stimulate motor nerves & improve proprioception
* improve the quality of skin and coat
* improve digestion
* help increase oxygen to cells
* stimulate and benefit each system of the body

Massage is a perfect complimentary therapy in a well-rounded holistic approach to your dog’s health — physically, emotionally, and mentally!

“How many sessions will I need?”

Every animal is an individual, and there is no requirement for a certain number of session, but it’s important to understand that deep change requires effort.

For acupressure and reiki treatments you should be open to having four sessions in order to see significant changes in your animal’s health and emotional wellbeing. Acupressure treatments should be spaced out to allow the animal to adjust between sessions. Reiki sessions can be scheduled daily if desired, and this kind of “intensive” can jumpstart healing.

Acupressure is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and has been used for thousands of years to promote health by assisting the body to achieve a harmonious state of balance within itself and in relation to its environment. Like acupuncture, acupressure helps adjust the energy (Chi or Qi) running through the body by manipulating specific points on the body.

No needles are used, only gentle pressure.

Both chronic and short term physical and behavioral imbalances can be helped with acupressure. Chronic imbalances are best served by a series of treatments rather then a single session because the goal is to help the body rebalance itself for lasting health. Regular treatments are also wonderful for preventing imbalances over time.

Acupressure sessions include an assessment and treatment.

My goal is to make animal acupressure and massage as mainstream and accepted as any other form of bodywork. People are not the only mammals that can reap the benefits of acupressure and massage. Our animal friends are capable of feeling the same stress release and calming effects of a massage session as we do.

Increase blood and lymph circulation
Stimulate muscles to strengthen the body
Reduce stress and tension
Soothe the strained muscles of the week-end athlete
Helps the arthritic dog regain flexibility and mobility
Creates balance
Promotes healthy skin and coat
Interrupts muscle habitual “holding patterns”, which may help reverse chronic conditions
Improves pliability of connective tissues, helping prevent and break down adhesions
Reduces pain and soreness

I feel that by offering this service to your canine companion, in addition to proper nutrition and regular exercise, you are ensuring another important component in maintaining a well balanced and healthy pet.

Massage is a time-honored method of reducing stress and tension that usually brings a feeling of calmness. Massage and acupressure is most helpful in restoring proper movement to injured limbs and joints.

Acupressure is a fingertip technique that uses the meridian system and acupuncture uses a needle to pierce the skin. Acupressure uses fingertip pressure on the skin’s surface.

Meridians are energy pathways that travel just beneath the skin’s surface. They connect the body’s surface with the interior organ systems and regulate energy and blood flow through the entire body. Health comes from balance and when balance exists, the body, mind and emotions are happy and peaceful. I believe this is true for animals and people.

Acupressure is a great form of therapy that uses the practitioner’s fingertips to apply pressure at various points on the body in order to access and release blocked or congested energy. This stimulation releases muscle tension and diffuses toxic buildup, which promotes blood and energy circulation, allowing the body to heal naturally.

Like acupuncture, acupressure is part of the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complete system of healing that dates back approximately 3000 years. A holistic approach, TCM recognizes patterns and imbalances that Western medicine does not. In TCM, health is viewed as the balance of the animal’s physical and emotional condition, in harmony with the environment. Disease occurs when the balance and harmony are upset.

While acupressure can successfully help to resolve chronic problems, its intent is preventative, either by maintaining health through regular treatments, or by resolving a problem in the early stages before it becomes chronic or serious. The emphasis is on healing the whole body and seeking the root cause of an illness, rather than simply treating the current symptom.

Acupressure has been used to successfully treat a wide range of conditions, from pain (including chronic pain) and arthritis to internal medical conditions, digestive disorders, behavioral issues, and even itchy skin. It can be used to support healing, relieve stress, reduce muscle spasms, improve mobility, strengthen the immune system, enhance circulation and promote general wellness.

A non-invasive healing modality, Massage/Acupressure should be utilized as a complementary therapy and never as a substitute for proper veterinary care.

When Confidence, Comfort, Gait & Balance Make the Difference!

Whether competing in conformation, agility, obedience, fly-ball, herding, drafting or field events, a skilled canine bodyworker can help your dog achieve peak performance by:

* Restoring Flexibility and Range of Motion,
* Improving Gait and Balance,
* Soothing Sore Muscles and Joints,
* Calming Excitable Dogs,
* Energizing Lethargic Dogs,
* Preventing Injury,
* Relaxing,
* Focusing,
* Counteracting Stress, and
* Making Your Dog Feel Great!

Like their human counterparts, canine athletes need to focus, warm up, cool down and stretch in order to give their best performances. Olympic competitors benefit from sports massage before and after races, gymnastics, jumping, swimming and other games. Our dogs can receive the same performance-enhancing and health-promoting benefits from canine sports massage.

Simultaneously, relieving the dog’s muscles of spasms, tension, scar tissue and adhesions aids significantly in preventing the muscle, tendon and ligament tears associated with many canine sports.
Dogs who get the most from sports massage are those who need to:

* Gait Smoothly,
* Turn Quickly,
* Jump Cleanly,
* Move Comfortably and
* Remain Relaxed and Focused.

Conformation

In the conformation ring, dogs should demonstrate correct movement and attitude for their breed. This may encompass reach, drive, symmetry, balance, head and tail carriage, flexibility of top line, animation of movement, focus, expression and alertness. All of these characteristics can be enhanced with sports massage by a trained and experienced professional canine bodyworker. Muscle tension and joint stiffness can severely limit a dog’s natural, carriage, animation, fluid gait, reach and drive and cause the dog to move unevenly. While massage cannot improve on a dog’s fundamental conformation and natural gait, it can reduce artificial limitations and free the dog to show the best of what it has.

* Reach and drive can be restricted by tight muscles in the shoulders, hindquarters, neck and back. Massage relieves such muscle tension, allowing limbs to move smoothly and joints to flex and extend fully.
* Head and tail carriage are affected by tension in the neck, rump, back and even in the jaws. Again, massage can help.
* A dog’s top line may be held rigidly, roach or dip because of soreness and tension in muscles alongside the spine, across the rump, across and between the ribs and in the abdominal region. Massage can increase the flexibility of the spine, allowing the back to be carried correctly and producing more fluid movement.
* Animation of gait is owed to flexibility and range of motion in the shoulders, elbows, “wrists,” hips, stifles, hocks, back and neck.
* Relaxation and focus improve attention, responsiveness, body carriage, alertness, “flash” and performance.
* In other words, massage can make the difference between the BOB, BOW, BIS and “also shown.”

Agility, Obedience and Other Canine Performance Sports

Jumping, turning, bending, balance, climbing, crouching and speed rely on comfort and good flexibility, posture and range of motion. Even a dog’s ability and willingness to sit straight, grip firmly or carry heavy objects can be related to musculoskeletal condition.

Simultaneously, participation in any canine sport brings along with it the risk of injury. The better the dog’s musculoskeletal condition and the less muscle tension the dog retains at the outset, the less likely it is to tear muscles, tendons and ligaments. Routine massage throughout training can help in developing and maintaining good, symmetrical musculoskeletal conditioning. Warm-up, cool-down and stretching sessions do wonders to prepare a dog for competition, prevent injury and relax the dog afterward in anticipation of competing another day.

Appropriate and properly applied massage techniques can play a critical role in a dog’s conditioning and performance in sports, including:

* Agility,
* Obedience,
* Tracking,
* Schutzhund,
* Hunt Tests and Field Trials,
* Herding,
* Draft Tests,
* Carting,
* Sledding,
* Lure Coursing,
* Rally Obedience,
* Fly-Ball and more!

Tight and sore muscles, coupled with limited joint mobility can have a serious impact on your dog’s speed, agility and focus. Discomfort distracts and discourages the movements which have previously resulted in pain. Reach and drive are critical to all canine competitive sports, which require speed. All of these things may be improved by routine canine sports massage.
Agility

Clearly, a dog must be alert, fast and flexible to run, jump climb and crawl its way through an agility course. Increasing spinal flexibility, alone, can improve performance on the weave poles and tunnel. Balance can be impaired by muscular tension, decreasing the agility dog’s willingness and ability to cross the dog walk or the teeter-totter. Good contacts on equipment such as the A-frame depend on a dog’s ability to control the descent and landing, which, in turn, depend on excellent muscular condition.

In other words, a superior performance in the agility ring requires superior agility (!) and massage is one of the keys to obtaining and maintaining that agility.
Jumping

Obedience, Schutzhund, agility, fly-ball and a number of other canine sports require jumping (and, in some cases, climbing.) A dog who inexplicably begins to knock the bars of jumps may suffer from serious muscle tension or joint inflexibility. A dog who starts to refuse jumps may hesitate in anticipation of the pain which could result from a hard or unbalanced landing that puts significant force onto the forelegs, shoulders, neck and spine. By releasing muscle tension, massage can often restore and improve on jump performance.
Hunting and Field Trials

As well as speed and drive, field work necessitates the hunting dog’s ability and willingness to pick up, gently grip and carry birds and bumpers over relatively long distances. While retrievers, pointers and spaniels usually have strong, well-developed neck muscles, if those muscles or those of the jaws are caught in spasm, (artificial contraction,) retrieved objects will prove awkward and uncomfortable to carry, especially at speed. Flexibility of spine, neck and jaw can also help prevent excessive re-gripping and mouthing of birds and bumpers and can be key to the dog exercising a soft mouth. Again, massage can help.
Drafting, Carting and Sledding

Strength, alone, doesn’t win races or weight pulls. In order to pull a load in the desired direction, the dog must be balanced and symmetrically-developed. Massage and conditioning exercises can help monitor and achieve proper bilateral muscle tone and development. The muscles of the chest, shoulders, thorax and hindquarters are all essential to forward momentum and a powerful pull and cannot work at their maximum capacity unless they are freed from tension, adhesions, scarring and spasms (“knots.”) Here, too, massage can help throughout training as well as in preparation for and cool-down after an event.
Hopefully it’s clear from the above examples how you can use sports massage to improve and enhance your dog’s performance in a wide variety of competitive sports and games.
Show Stress

Travel to shows and events can be stressful for even the most easy-going dogs. Long hours in crates and on the road can cause cramps and stiffness. Nights in unfamiliar surroundings can mean restlessness and loss of sleep (for all parties concerned! ) Handler stress, interruption of daily routine and the chaos of the show environment may cause some dogs to become anxious, excitable, distracted or unusually sensitive. Dogs competing in performance events may develop sore muscles or even risk injury. The presence of hundreds of other dogs and the excitement of the show grounds can affect many dogs’ concentration, confidence and focus. Massage can help your dog overcome these and many other obstacles.

A non-invasive healing modality, massage should be utilized as a complementary therapy and never as a substitute for proper veterinary care.
