Thank you for addressing this difficult topic. I am an animal chaplain in Minneapolis who works with people to help them prepare for, cope with and move on after pet loss. When I was writing my book "Good Grief: Finding Peace After Pet Loss," I was told time and again how important it was to have a source of validation out there. More often, animal lovers are met with unfeeling responses to their pain like, "What's the big deal? It was just a stupid dog. Go to the pound now and get a replacement!"

That lack of societal support actually often makes grieving the loss of an animal even more difficult than grieving the loss of some humans. At least with the latter, we're given "permission" to feel the pain and not encouraged to deny or stuff those emotions.
